Focus on the Essentials - Minimalism at work | Issue # 02
Remove everything that distracts you, see what's left - Focus on what matters.
Namastey!
Hope you’re all doing good. I’m on a 52-week streak to publish one newsletter every week. Well, It’s time for the second newsletter issue. Let’s get on with it.
It was July 2011 I guess! I had finished my Senior High school and was in the first year of my college.
I didn’t know what to do so I used to read a lot of articles - ‘online’.
Blogging was like the next big thing back then, so I started reading a lot of blogs, hoping to find an answer as to what I would do after my graduation.
In this pursuit, I stumbled upon many blogs. Some of the names that I still remember :
I read archives of these blogs - not all of the articles but yeah an awful lot of them, and over the past 10 years. Much of the learning has worn off.
But there’s something that stayed, all these years:
Declutter - Focus on the Essentials.
~ Inspired by the idea of Minimalism.
Well, if you don’t know what Minimalism is! Here’s something for a start :
“Minimalism is a lifestyle that helps people question what things add value to their lives. By clearing the clutter from life’s path, we can all make room for the most important aspects of life: health, relationships, passion, growth, and contribution.”
Need more? Watch this TEDx talk from the creators of theminimalists.com (Just so you know It has got some 57k likes and 4 Million Youtube views so far). If you can’t watch it right now, You can Add it to your Youtube’s ‘Watch later’ list.
A rich life with less stuff | The Minimalists | TEDxWhitefish
While the idea of Minimalism is more about ‘Stop chasing money & the material possessions ’ and focus on more important aspects of your life.
You can also indulge the same thought pattern into your work layer to bring in more clarity while planning & prioritizing your projects & Tasks.
Here’s something I do when it comes to planning and organizing my work :
Declutter - Remove all the fluffy tasks that I can delegate to someone else, also the tasks that are not urgent and can wait on the side without hampering my workflow.
Focus on the Essentials - I focus on what’s essential for my product growth that is in line with my product vision?
Reduce Friction Points - I try to find friction points (and opportunities) in my workflow, which if optimized (and acted upon) can instantly improve my Sales/User growth/Workflow?
Following this pattern - you might often come across a problem that overlaps these questions and part of you would know you should solve that very problem firsthand.
Now, I don’t claim this would work for everyone in every situation. So don’t take it for what it is not ~ An excuse to not work your brain muscles.
But take it for what is, a method that might work for you to bring back your attention from the fluff and focus it on the thing that matters most and solve for it.
I am glad you made it so far. If you want to read more stuff along the same lines, I would recommend the following articles from theminimalists.com :
Like I did in the previous newsletter issue, Here are some other updates that I would love to share with you :
